Northern.tech is the company behind Mender, the leading open source over-the-air (OTA) software update platform for IoT devices. Used by thousands of companies worldwide, Mender manages gateways, security cameras, vehicles, satellites, and other connected devices. Our mission is to secure the world’s connected devices by building a portfolio of best-in-class system management and cybersecurity products. We are looking for a Product Manager to lead our next product.
About the role
You will be the founding Product Manager for Northern.tech’s next commercial product. You’ll work closely with engineering, the CTO, and commercial teams to define, build, and bring to market a new product that complements Mender and leverages our shared platform (device identity, user management, audit logging). The product will be sold as a standalone offering and as a cross-sell to Mender’s existing customer base.
This is a zero to hero role: you will own the product from concept through market launch.
In this position, you will:
- Validate product-market fit through customer interviews, demand probes (e.g., Mender add-ons), and competitive analysis. Define the product vision, roadmap, and go-to-market strategy against both commercial vendors and open-source alternatives.
- Take the product from concept through MVP to GA. Own scope, prioritization, and trade-offs. Define what “best-in-class” looks like for a focused initial use case, then expand incrementally.
- Align engineering, customer engineering, sales, and marketing around the product. Navigate the organizational boundary between Engineering and Customer Engineering.
- Track regulatory drivers (EU Cyber Resilience Act, ENISA reporting) and industry trends (European semiconductor sovereignty, hyperscaler lock-in) that create market opportunities.
- Build and maintain competitive intelligence, particularly against open-source tool combinations that prospects stitch together, mirroring Mender’s competitive dynamics.
- Define pricing, packaging, and sales plays. Enable the sales team to cross-sell to Mender’s existing customer base and to open new budget conversations (compliance-mandated vs. discretionary spend).
- Define success metrics, run experiments, and iterate. Own the feedback loop from customers back into the roadmap.
About you
Required skills and experience:
- 5–8+ years in product management, with at least one from zero to product launch in B2B enterprise software.
- Deep understanding of IoT, embedded systems, or device management. You know why managing a gateway fleet is fundamentally different from managing cloud infrastructure.
- Experience with cybersecurity, compliance tooling, or software supply chain concepts (PKI, SBOM, CVE, VEX) is a strong plus.
- Comfortable operating in a small-team, high-autonomy environment where you own the problem end-to-end.
- Track record of working across engineering and go-to-market teams to ship and sell products.
- Familiarity with open-source business models and competing against OSS alternatives.
- Strong analytical skills: you make decisions with data, competitive research, and customer evidence, not opinions.
- Excellent English communication.
Desired skills and experience:
- Background in embedded Linux, Yocto, and Zephyr/FreeRTOS
- Familiarity with IoT connectivity protocols (MQTT, AMQP, LwM2M) and cloud IoT platforms (AWS IoT Core, Azure IoT Hub).
- Experience building products that integrate into a multi-product platform.
- Prior work with European OEMs in industrial, automotive, or consumer electronics verticals.
